At Roller Surgery Center, we’re committed to making your surgery experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. We specialize in same-day procedures that let you return home on the same day of surgery. Our modern ambulatory surgery center provides specialized care–here’s what you can expect every step of the way.
Before Surgery
Arrival Time and Preparation
The day before your surgery, we will call you to let you know your exact arrival time. Please plan to arrive at least one hour before your surgery is scheduled to start. This will give us enough time to complete any necessary paperwork and prepare you for your procedure.
Fasting Instructions
You may have clear liquids, like water, apple juice, or non-red Gatorade, up to three hours before arrival. Clear liquids are anything you can see through, and this does not include drinks like orange juice or milk. If your surgery is scheduled for the afternoon, you may have a light breakfast, but it must be at least seven hours before your arrival time. A light breakfast could include cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit, or tea.
Medications and Supplements
If you take any medications, especially blood thinners, please consult your surgeon and prescribing physician to ensure it’s safe to continue. For surgeries on your foot, ankle, hand, wrist, or elbow, you can continue taking aspirin, but for other types of surgery, consult your surgeon first. Additionally, please stop taking vitamins, herbal supplements, and weight-loss drugs (like those in the GLP-1 agonist class) seven days before surgery.
Pre-Surgery Call
You’ll receive a call from our pre-op nurse a few days before surgery. They’ll go over your medical history, review the instructions again, and answer any questions you may have. You’ll also need to confirm that you have a responsible adult to accompany you home after surgery.
Day of Surgery
Items to Bring
On the day of your surgery, please bring your valid insurance card and photo identification. If you must pay any fees not covered by your insurance, please take care of these before surgery. If you’re a parent bringing a child in for surgery, bring a favorite blanket or toy for comfort.
What to Wear
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you’re having surgery on your shoulder, arm, or hand, we suggest wearing a button-down shirt, as it can be easier to put on over a sling or cast. If you’re having surgery on your legs or feet, loose-fitting pants will be more comfortable. Please avoid jewelry, makeup, or contact lenses, as these can interfere with your surgery and recovery.
What to Leave at Home
Please leave your wallet (except for your insurance card and ID) and valuables at home. Our center cannot be responsible for lost items, so it’s best to keep everything else at home. Also, please arrange for any children who are not the patient to stay at home with a responsible adult.
Meeting Your Care Team
Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our registration staff, who will complete any final paperwork. After that, you’ll be escorted to the pre-operative suite, where you’ll meet with a nurse, the anesthesiologist, and your surgeon. They’ll review your health history, answer last-minute questions, and ensure you’re ready for surgery. You’ll also meet the operating room nurse who will be caring for you during the procedure.
After Surgery
Recovery and Monitoring
After surgery, you’ll be transferred to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), where our nurses will closely monitor your recovery from anesthesia. We’ll ensure you’re comfortable and stable before allowing anyone to join you. Once you’re awake, a family member or friend can join you in the PACU, where the nurse will review your post-operative care instructions, including how to take care of your surgical site, manage pain, and when to follow up with your doctor.
Going Home
We understand that you’re eager to get home. After your recovery period in the PACU, you’ll be discharged and able to go home the same day. You’ll need to have a responsible adult with you to drive you home, and they should stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery to ensure you’re comfortable and to follow any post-surgery instructions.
Follow-Up Care
After you’ve been discharged, your surgeon will provide specific instructions for at-home care. This includes managing pain, caring for your surgical site, and when to schedule your follow-up appointment. Be sure to follow these instructions to ensure the best possible recovery.
